I’m thankful for my faithful Paper Blogging reader, Debora. She is an artist in Belgium, and I writing and teaching in the States, we connect live online occasionally and help each other with our creative work.
We also send real, analog mail, and Debora frequently finds or makes something typewriter-related for me that arrives as a surprise and a delight with all those lovely Belgian stamps. I once opened a package from her at one of my frequent hospital appointments last year as I battled a difficult medical issue. The welcome mail had been waiting for me at the front door as I left for the hospital and I snagged it on my way out. I dove into the packaging in the silent, still examining room, as I waited for the doctor. I completely forgot where I was, lost in the thoughtful painting and paper pieces she’d carefully stowed, and I looked up with surprise when the doctor finally arrived. He looked like he was interrupting a paper party, and he was.
Friends near and far have a way of taking us out of ourselves and the many difficult moments of life.
Best of all is Debora’s quiet encouragement as she figures our her own creative path and I wrestle with mine. She reminds me by her example to get back to the core of what I meant to do. Neither of us has it down, but we’re walking the path together.
